The latest episodes from my pals from The SwitchCast that talks about the potential of Splatoon, Pokémon, and Super Smash Bros. Splatoon was featured in the Switch reveal but Pokémon and Smash have yet to be announced.
While this episode covers the bases, there were a few things that I wanted to add.
Nintendo flirted with Splatoon as an esports game back in the Summer of last year so them teasing it as such in the Switch reveal trailer is nothing new. I’m sure a few of people where would go out to events if Nintendo started doing tournaments for it. As for the Polygon article saying that Splatoon couldn’t be an esport because Counter Strike Global Offensive lets you buy stuff mid-game is a dumb because older CS game didn’t have that and they did very in high-level competitive play.
Depending on what type for game Pokémon Switch becomes ( I think Pokémon Switch will go the Stadium route), it’s almost guaranteed an audience for a most part since they already have an established esports scene for the most part. It’s not League of Legends big, but the demand is certainly there.
Super Smash Bros. games usually comes comes to surface when the game’s system has been out for a while (Meleé was the only exception). So don’t expect any Smash Switch news until AFTER the system is out for a year or two.
But as for the competitive scene, Nintendo always tried to keep distance from Smash being an esports game although they seem more open to other games being esports games. They have shown better esports support for Pokkén Tournament . Smash was always meant as the “party game”, and the no item Final Destination is a far extreme from how Nintendo meant it to be played.
